We have been talking about the earth return of current over at the junction box topic so I decided to do some looking with my Fluke clamp on.
The transformer in front of my house seems to be getting about 3.4-4.0a from the ground wire. When I look at my GEC it looks like I am getting about .4a from there with about 60a of load.
That is with the normal triplex overhead drop, 200a service, 4/0 aluminum on my side.

Yes this has become a topic as of late. A lot of the problem seems to be with the utility companies all over the country. They typically use the earth as a return path for neutral current, and that is causing stray voltages. This may have been what you were measuring.

The earth is certainly not the sole path for neutral current since I can see the connection of both the primary and secondary to the neutral strand but it is clear the earth is a parallel path taking a few amps of the current. (about a half amp from my house)
It appears that they have 2 transformers serving 6 homes in parallel, then another set of drops starts on the next pole. I never really looked much at what goes on up there in NESCland. My neighbor is an FPL bucket truck guy. I guess I should invite him over for a beer and a chat.
