In an effort to satisfy 230-2(e), a contractor has labelled one end of a building as "Electrical meter room 1 of 2". Then the signage goes on to say that "Electrical meter room 2 of 2" is located at the opposite end of the building.

This building has a total of 2 services.

I told the contractor that the signage did not satisfy 230-2(e) because it did not clearly state the number of services. All the rest of the signage (I did not list it all here) complies and is not an issue.

The contractor claims that the signage meets the intent of the code in that someone will open the doors (can't walk in, doors are to provide weather protection only) and see that it's one service and when they go to the other end of the building they will open the doors and see that it's another service.

??

I think I'm right but he doesn't. Opinions please. Am I being reasonable or am I being stubborn? confused

I may be more stubborn than you. I think there should be a sign that not only gives the number of services but the location of the other disconnect. I would give the mission to the fire marshal if you don't have success. He doesn't want his people in a building thinking it's safe because he pulled the meter and half of it is still energized.

I agree with you Nick. If you have the 2002 handbook go to page 128 and look at the picture in exhibit 230.1. Show that to your contractor. Let us know how you make out.

Got a solid to ask all of you-

Being that I'm in Texas at this moment and I'm not sure if my 2002 NEC Handbook is in my new Jupiter office, can someone fax the page that Mike is referring to:

Fax: 561-746-8108

Attn: Nick

It's something I need Mon AM and I get back late night Sun. Thanks.

[Nick back from Texas]:

Mike,

The info was great. I stopped in at the office at 6:30 on the way to the job and there it was on the fax machine.

Went to the job and failed the inspection again but talked to the contractor, showed him the copy of the handbook. Agreed on some wording and actually spelled it out on paper, and both I and the contractor put our initials on it.

He assures me that the signage will be corrected and up by Wed., and I will pass the job on Wed. when I see it.

Thanks for all your help. These buildings are 24 unit condo's and this is the first of about 40 buildings! So it was urgent that I get this first one right. Thanks again everyone for your efforts and thanks to IAEI for this wonderful site where we can enforce NEC code from anywhere in the world!
