IAEI Minutes
January 3, 2001

The meeting was called to order by Jimmy Douglas on January 3, 2001 at the Holiday Inn in Palatka at 12:05 p.m.

Present at the meeting were: Phil Dunnington, John T. Martin, Joff Filion, Dwight Wilkes, Sam Gerace, Dallas Stratton, John Griffin, Jimmy Douglas, J.C. Patrick, William Thompson, Don Brindley and Dan Carter.

John Griffin gave the invocation.

The minutes were approved as sent out.

Treasure Report: Dallas Stratton reported we are solvent and all bills are paid.

Old Business: The ever confusing issue of heat and A/C disconnects regarding locations, working conditions, work area, safety, locking devices, internal disconnects and who determines what is to be done was a carry over issue from the October meeting that ended with the statement, “the locking device would give the greater safety to the person working on the unit.” We were not able to resolve the issue by just using the NEC. It was clarified that the mechanical code would require a disconnect at the unit even if the electrical code did not.

Don Brindley led a discussion on the 14 hr. course he is writing for the Division. Dan Carter reported that Kim DeBerry of Kim’s Electric Co., Inc. who sits on the ECLB Board had reported at the JMA meeting that the board had voted to require 4 hr. education credits from contractors on the Florida Building Code. The break down would be 1 hr. safety, 1 hr. business, 1 hr. workman’s comp, 4 hrs-
Florida Building Code and 7 technical. Don Brindley said also that the Inspectors were going to need 2 hrs. of handicap credits. Don was concerned that this could be put into 1 course and will look into what is required for the 4 hr. and report back to the Division in February.

John Griffin led a discussion in November on labeling and listing of assemblies. John brought in a box, plug and plate all from different brand names and we continued this discussion. Johns question was, “What constitutes when you need to have an approved assembly?” J.C. Patrick with ETL Testing Lab. And others discussed this in detail and some conclusions were forthcoming.

New Business: Dwight Wilkes led a discussion about the State Chapter Web Site. Dwight said that Ruben Rocha who is in charge of the web site, will discuss the future use of the site at the Division meeting in January. The conclusion was to have an open web site with links to Building Officials Association of Florida (BAOF.NET).

The next meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn in Palatka on February 7, 2001 at 12:00 noon.

J.C. Patrick drew John Martin’s name out of the hat for the 50/50 draw. Lucky John.

Respectfully Submitted,

Daniel L. Carter
