IAEI Minutes
April 4, 2001

The meeting was called to order by Jimmy Douglas on April 4, 2001 at the Holiday Inn in Palatka at 12:00 p.m.

Present at the meeting were: Gordon “Don Brindley, Dallas Stratton, John Griffin, Ron Rowe, William Thompson, Jimmy Douglas, J.C. Patrick, Jim Williams, Dan Standish, Phil Dunnington, John T. Martin, Mark Nechvatal, Carl Beaton. Eric Brunn, Thomas Underwood, Joff Filion, Taylor Sams, Michael Timpanaro, Stan DeAngelis, Howard White, Dwight Wilkes, Cliff Wilson, George (Rusty) Jakes, Dan Arlington and Dan Carter.

John Griffin gave the invocation.

The minutes were approved as sent out.

Treasurer Report: Dallas Stratton reported we are solvent and all bills are paid.

Old Business: Dallas Stratton was elected by the inspectors (in good standing) in a close election to represent the North Florida Division in the rotation at the State Chapter level to become President. Dwight Wilkes called for one unanimous vote after the vote was over and this was done.

Dwight Wilkes (Officers Installation Dinner Chairman) is still looking at possible places to hold the Installation Dinner. Dwight said he would give a full report next month.

New Business: Phil Dunnington led a discussion on single-family dwellings with one raceway from a meter can feeding 2-200a MLO panels. What about conduit fill? Rating? Carl Beaton summed it up by saying that the wire rating should be based on the Note #3 Table.

Ron Rowe led a discussion on cords being run under carpets. 400.8-Physical damage prevents it.
John Griffin led a discussion about breaker locks used instead of disconnects on water heaters. The general consensus was that in this application it would be all right. In other cases even though the breaker lock would be the safest, the HVAC code would require a disconnect. Dan Arlington said he would take the discussion about water heaters to the BAOF and report back to us.

Phil Dunnington led a discussion about a commercial pool and spa with respects to an insight disconnect. The conclusion was that you would need one within sight.

Dan Arlington introduced Rusty Jakes from Atlantic Beach as his guest. We hope you come again Rusty and become a member.

John Griffin said he wants “no new rules” for the next 10 years; reminded us the Code was a minimum code and based on safety. Don Brindley reminded John that the NEC would change every three years anyway. Carl Beaton and John Martin reminded everyone that our Division of the IAEI could discuss and determine the best interpretation of the Code but have no authority to set a standard for the entire North Florida area.

This secretary would like to say “Thank you” to all the inspectors who attend and try to come to some kind of conclusion on interpretation of the NEC. We as contractors face a variety of interpretations from all the different counties. Even if we can not set the standard in our area we can determine what is considered practical and safe.

Education Committee Chairman: Don Brindley covered the following Code articles:

230-40 Ex 4 230-40 Ex 5
230-42A 230-42B
230-46 230-50A

Jimmy Douglas pulled Carl Beaton’s name out of the hat for the 50/50 draw. Lucky Carl.

The next meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn in Palatka on May 2, 2001 at 12:00 noon.

Respectfully submitted,

Daniel L. Carter
Secretary
