IAEI Minutes
March 2, 2005
www.iaeifl.org Joff Filion called the meeting to order on, March 2, 2005 at the Quality Riverfront Inn in Palatka at 12:00 PM.
Present at the meeting were: John Griffin, Charles Crain, Joff Filion, Taylor Sams, Bill Thompson, Don Brindley, Jimmy Douglas, Dwight Wilkes, Jim Lindahl, Mark Nechvatal, Mike Timpanaro, Phil Dunnington, Andrew Schirmacher, Wayne Zeigler, Paul McMahon, Ernie Winfree, Richard Davis, James Drummond, Dallas Stratton, Larry Woodrome, Cliff Wilson, Sam Gerall and Alan Waters.
The minutes were approved as sent out; John Griffin gave the invocation and led The Pledge of Allegiance.
Treasury Report: Dallas Stratton said all bills are paid and we are solvent.
Old Business: Don Brindley announced that he now has the credentials to teach engineers. Any engineer that attends our courses will now get credit for it.
He also announced that there are a couple CILB rated courses that are available, for those of you needing strictly electrical certification remember your courses need to be ECLB rated for the credits to be recognized.
Mark Nechvatal brought up a job where an auto transfer switch is being added to an existing service for the addition of a standby generator. It was agreed that this is a service increase and that the newest codes should be applied. A service-disconnect and over-current protection will be incorporated either integral or immediately adjacent to, and the panel will become a 4-wire system. If the transfer switch is used as part of this equipment it must be service rated.
New Business: Mike Timpanaro brought it to our attention that Seagull Lighting has sent out a product recall. Seagull primarily makes lighting fixtures for residences. Apparently certain fixtures have hardware issues and can fall from the ceiling.
Joff Filion introduced Terry Summerall, State IAEI President. He has been visiting with the different divisions focusing on the 2005 State Chapter Meeting and Code conference. The conference is set for May 11th- 14th, at the Radisson Bahia Mar Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale. I have included a copy of the Registration Form in this mail out. More information can be obtained thru the website (
www.iaeifl.org) if needed.
Terry Summerall also brought up the Senate Bill (#442) to replace the NEC as our State Code with the International Electrical Code; Terry Baker from Fort Lauderdale is going to assist Terry with this. Terry is asking for us to contact our House Representative or Senator to try and keep us in the NEC.
Terry Summerall also said (in reference to generators) that a particular model of home stand-by unit that has the generator ready panel is in violation of the code and are failing inspections. The whip provided with the unit does not have a branch circuit neutral wire to move into the new panel along with the circuit. It is felt that if you move the circuit you must move the neutral as well. Mike Timpanaro said he had heard of this problem as well and in particular a homeowner who had purchased this ready panel had selected a bedroom circuit but the factory would not allow for an arc-fault breaker be installed in the field. The unit would have to be returned to the factory (for the installation) for it to remain listed and warrantable.
Don Brindley asked that we nominate Mike Timpanaro to replace John Martin on the Chapter Board of Directors. A motion was made and seconded.
The North Florida Division has two sponsored seminars available: one at the Marion County Auditorium (Ocala) June 18th & 19th, the second at the Modis Building (Jacksonville) July 23rd & 24th. I have included copies of the registration form in the mail out or I will have copies with me at the April meeting.
Education: Don Brindley read from the 2005 Code Analysis book starting in 200.6(D) and read thru 210.8(B)(5).
Joff asked Terry Summerall to pull the ticket from the hat for the 50/50 draw. He selected Andrew Schirmacher’s number. Lucky Andrew.
The next meeting will be held at the Quality Inn in Palatka at 12:00 noon April 6, 2005.
