Secretary's Report September 19, 2001

The meeting was called to order by President Dave Cake at McDonald Electrical Distributors in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, September 19, 2001. Present were President Dave Cake, Third Vice President Lee Wansor, Secretary/Treasurer Ted Licitra, Past President Jim Sennello, Directors Tom Bray, Associates Gary Simon and John Sims.

The minutes of the last meeting along with the treasurers report were read and approved.

Scholarship Committee: There has been no applicants for the scholarship yet, but it still will be available after the school year starts.

Education Committee: Tarry Baker reported the dates of classes for next year will be out in November. All inspectors are required by the State to complete a four hour core curriculum course on the new Florida Building Code. The class will based on the differences between the South Florida Building Code and the new Florida Building Code.
Our Division will be sponsoring a fire alarm seminar in February. Mr Mark Ode from UL will be the speaker.

Code Clearing: Joe McCann spoke about a newsletter he received from NECA. The letter mentioned NFPA went against Code Making Panel Sevens objections to allowing romex in buildings above three floors. Joe also mentioned a problem he has been having with dryers being installed with three wire cords. It seems the manufacturers specifications indicate a three wire hook up even though it is a violation of the NEC.
Tarry Baker reported that due to the 2002 NEC having an administration section, which would conflict with the Florida Building Code he doubts the State will adopt the 2002 NEC for a couple of years.

New Business: There is a proposed code change prohibiting Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing contractors from become building officials. Dave Cake will write a letter to the board expressing why we think it is unfair.
Jim Sennello made a motion to send a donation from our Division to a disaster relief fund. Motion was seconded and approved.
Nominating Committee: Dave Cake appointed Tarry Baker, Jim Sennello and myself to the nominating committee.

Good Of The Association: Tom Bray indicate now is the time to have code sections from the South Florida Building Code incorporated into Chapter 27 of the new Florida Building Code. Tom said you must provide back up information for any proposals submitted.

The meeting was adjourned to the education portion where several board members who attended the Florida Chapter meeting went over the code questions from that meeting.
The meeting was attended by 79 people.
