#3167 - 10/25/06 11:26 PM Raceway in the tiebeam?

I know this is not really a NEC issue but you guys get around. Is there any rule against running a concrete compliant raceway through the structural tie beam or dowelled cells?

If not specifically shown on the plans, it would (probably) be questioned and not pass lintel inspection. The structural engineer of record would have to say it's OK by letter with raised seal.

I don't know enough of design to say whether a 3/4", 1", 2", etc., PVC raceway could compromise the integrity of the typical block - CMU bond beam that we see so much of down here. My guess is that a 2" PVC wouldn't make it, but maybe 1/2" or 3/4" would.

Typically the structural drawing will show a cross-section of the bond beam with 2 #5 rebar or however many (and no electrical), so it would not be allowed in that respect. Interesting question.

Also the rebar will still have to meet the minimum cover requirements. Placement of the PVC raceway could very well be an issue here.

I think it's ok, don't we do that all the time with DWV?

I think he means parallel to.

Yes I was referring to running parallel to the rebar in the beam. I see what you are getting at about staying away from the rebar. I have just not heard much about this one way or the other and I was asked the question.

So if they stub straight up through the tie beam it is OK but they can't run horizontally through the tie beam? That makes sense. I guess that means they also have to stay out of the dowelled cells too. Thanks
