Has anyone ever proposed a program to go back and inspect a sample of dwellings that have been CO'ed for a year or two to see how well the electrical systems are holding up? I know IAEI is looking at pre-inspections of older dwellings before renovations but I was just curious about fairly new buildings. It might be interesting to see how long <pool> door alarms, exposed bonding condutors, AFCIs and smoke detectors last.
As a side note, I wonder how many of the recalled SqD AFCIs will ever get replaced. I do remember the study in central Fla where a scary number of GFCIs were simply dead, offering zero protection.
If we were ever going to do this, it might be time, since new starts are slowing down and there are lots of homes that got slammed together by marginal workers with minimal real inspecting going on in the last couple years.
No offense but when anyone with a rusty pair of Kliens and a mouthfull of wirenuts was an "electrician" and inspectors were leaving the office with 40 tickets there were probably some mistakes made.
