Minutes of the August 20, 2003 Meeting
The August meeting of the Gulf Coast Division was called to order by President, Bill Pancake. The meeting was held at the International Super Buffet in Port Charlotte. There were 22 members and guests present. After the pledge, all members and guests introduced themselves.
The minutes were approved as written.
The Treasurers report was approved as read.
Joe Schneeberger began the meeting by asking if a light was required in a clothes closet or a storage closet. Everyone agreed that a light would not be required unless there was equipment that needed servicing in the storage closet or room.
Joe also brought up the subject of receptacle outlets on a peninsular counter in the kitchen. We talked about providing one for the living area side of the counter. There are two separate requirements being dealt with here. The countertop area on the peninsular counter needs at least one receptacle. If there is a range top or sink in the counter it may need one on each side. The living area side of the counter is a separate consideration. A receptacle outlet needs to be installed not more than six feet from the edge of the counter in order to serve the living area side.
I talked about the seminar in November. Mark Ode, from U.L. in North Carolina is coming in to present a one and two family dwelling electrical systems seminar at Victoria Estates on November 1st.
Tom Lasprogato made a motion to donate $1,000.00 to the Bob Scott Memorial Fund that has been started. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously. I will present the check to Mark Ode in Orlando at the Diamond Jubilee Meeting.
Bill Pancake brought up the problem of unlicensed people installing ceiling fans after the final inspection has been completed. In some cases when the fan control switch is tripping the arc fault breaker, these people are removing the AFCI breakers and installing standard circuit breakers. The problem of unlicensed people installing these ceiling fans has always been with us. We need to keep an eye on this situation.
Pat Lewis gave us a presentation of commercial load calculations. Pat went through calculations for a store building 3000 sq ft. with 30 ft. of show window and 80 duplex receptacle outlets. This was a 120/240 volt single phase 3 wire service. Pat explained how the number of receptacle outlets, the number of branch circuits, service conductors and the main circuit breaker sizing was arrived at. This was a good presentation and we thank Joe Schneeberger and Pat Lewis for the time and effort they put into it.
Bill Pancake said he will try and get in touch with Kevin Arnold from Cooper-Bussman in order to have him give a presentation at the September or October meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 P.M.
The next meeting will be September 17, 2003.
CODE QUESTIONS FOR THE SEPTEMBER MEETING
Question 1
If I use EMT as the raceway for a motor branch circuit and flexible metal conduit for the connection to the motor, do I need to install an equipment grounding conductor?
Question 2
If the 20 ampere bathroom receptacle branch circuit supplies only one bathroom, can outlets for other equipment within the same bathroom be supplied by that branch circuit?
Question 3
I am wiring a residential water heater. The water heater is rated 4500 watts at 240 volts. What size copper conductors must be used to wire this heater?
Question 4
I installed a panel horizontally between a workbench and a wall cabinet. Can a panel be mounted in a horizontal position? This would make 240.81 impossible to follow.
Question 5
I’m installing a hydromassage bathtub in a residential bathroom. I have installed can lights above the tub. The inspector said I must put them on a GFCI circuit. The ceiling is 8 feet in height. Is a GFCI circuit required?
