Minutes of the January 21, 2004 Meeting
The January meeting of the Gulf Coast Division was called to order by President, Bill Pancake. The meeting was held at the International Super Buffet in Port Charlotte. There were 16 members and guests present. After the pledge, all members and guests introduced themselves.
The minutes were approved as written.
The Treasurers report was approved as read.
Joe Schneeberger announced that he had a 6 month free membership in the IAEI available for anyone interested.
Ben Cotroneo talked about provisional licenses.
Bill Pancake gave a report on the IAEI State board meeting which was held in Altamonte Springs. Bill, Ben Cotroneo, Tom Lasprogato, and Pete Pluta attended this meeting.
Building Officials Association of Florida has invited the Florida Chapter of the IAEI to become a member of
Building Officials Association of Florida. We are checking our bylaws to see if we can include
Building Officials Association of Florida in our organization. Dick Widera announced that he will be stepping down as the state secretary. The state budget is on hold until the May IAEI meeting. It will be discussed at that time.
The nominating committee placed a slate of officers for 2004 in nomination before the body in attendance. They were as follows: President Bill Pancake, 1st Vice-President Joe Schneeberger, 2nd Vice-President Gregg Brown, Secretary Pete Pluta, and Treasurer Mike Looney. We asked if there were any other nominations from the floor for any office. There were no other nominations. A motion was made and seconded to accept the slate of officers presented by acclamation. The motion passed unanimously.
Bill Pancake told us that he was going to review all committees and reorganize them. I talked about mailing IAEI membership renewal reminders. We have reworked a letter and soon will begin sending them out. I have held back because the IO is well behind in their renewal notification.
Toby Barber, was then introduced. She gave a presentation regarding low voltage wiring. She discussed home security wiring, TV wiring, satellite system wiring, intercoms, and remote control wiring of lighting and appliances. She recommended using a minimum of RE-6 COAX cable and CAT5 for telephone and intercom wiring. She told us that the difference between CAT5, CAT 5E, and CAT6 is how tightly each pair is twisted. Two runs of COAX to each TV outlet is best. Today, most homes have multiple TVs, phones, and computers. The electrical industry must wire for this equipment or other trades will. She also discussed thermostat wiring, central vacs, electric gates, outside lighting, freeze control and mold prevention. Downloading from wireless phones to computer and house sensors was mentioned. Wiring being installed by unlicensed people is a big problem. One of the biggest problems is the wiring of satellite systems. They are not being grounded properly. Toby favors permits for all low voltage wiring. Many municipalities are requiring this now. Tom Lasprogato talked about low voltage wiring for air conditioning systems. We talked about the proper fusing.
We talked about a couple of other matters. Smoke detectors in the bedrooms should be placed on an AFCI. It was brought up that an AFCI breaker may trip under load if the neutral is stripped too much and is close to the grounding conductor. We will look into this matter.
We talked about boxes being required for most bathroom side lights. Only an approved fluorescent fixture may be mounted without a box.
Joe Schneeberger brought up a question which was asked of him. Can a residential meter can rated 400 Amps (320 Amps continuous duty) be used on a 400 Amp service supplying two 200 Amp mains? We all agreed that this was acceptable and would be no problem.
We plan on having a guest speaker from Leviton Manufacturing at our next meeting. Mike Looney will check this out.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 P.M.
The next meeting will be February 18, 2004.
