Minutes of the February 18, 2004 Meeting
The February meeting of the Gulf Coast Division was called to order by President, Bill Pancake. The meeting was held at the International Super Buffet in Port Charlotte. There were 18 members and guests present. After the pledge, all members and guests introduced themselves.
The minutes were approved as written.
The Treasurers report was approved as read.
We began the meeting by talking about continuing education requirements. Gregg Brown mentioned an on line service called Red Vector. This is state approved and offers CE credit on line. He told us he got 2 hours of approved continuing education for a cost of $60.00. We discussed the problem of anyone being able to take these courses and receive the hours in someone else’s name and license number.
I told everyone that Mark Ode will be coming in on June 26th to do another seminar for us at Victoria Estates. He will be doing 4 hours on swimming pools, 1 hour on wiring methods, 1 hour on health care facilities, and 1 hour on motors and a/c and refrigerating equipment. This should be an interesting seminar and swimming pools is a topic that everyone has been asking for.
Bob Duncan. Former Building Official at Reedy Creek Dev., which is Disney, will be coming to our March meeting and giving a training presentation on Simtra Hybrid Cable Systems. I will be contacting Jerry Novak, a damage prevention specialist with Sunshine State One Call of Florida, Inc., to give a presentation at one of our upcoming meetings. These are the people that need to be called before an electrical contractor begins his trenching. He is located in St. Petersburg. I will let everyone know if I got hold of him at our next meeting.
We also talked about other possibilities for guest speakers at future meetings.
Ben Cotroneo, a past Florida Chapter president, then swore in the officers and board members.
Harvey Johnson brought up the subject of structural wiring systems. This type of wiring is not being permitted or inspected in many areas. This is becoming a real problem. Most of this wiring is being installed improperly. We also need to have someone come in and give a presentation on this type of wiring at a future meeting. Low voltage wiring is regulated be the NEC and should be permitted and inspected in all jurisdictions. A lengthy discussion followed. We will look into this and discuss this at a later meeting.
We are going to look into how other jurisdictions are handling the permitting of this type of wiring.
Joe Schneeberger brought up a question that was raised by someone to him. This involves an old house that is wired with a two wire system. What would be the best way to make the receptacle outlets safer in this house. The consensus was to use GFCI receptacles in this house.
There was a brief discussion regarding the use of VA instead of watts in the code.
Joe also asked if a refrigerator in a dwelling should be figured in the load calcs for the house. The consensus was that if a separate circuit was run for the refrigerator or if there were two refrigerator’s in the house, it would have to be figured in the load calcs.
Someone asked at what percentage an insta hot water heater should be calculated at. The consensus was 40%, the same as a water heater.
Committees were then discussed. We need people for a few committees. The NEC committee is one in particular. Pete Pluta will be the IAEI State Coordinating committee since he is working with
Building Officials Association of Florida and ICC for our organization. We are looking for a utility coordinating committee and a new products person. Jim Literello will be the new public relations person. Thanks Jim. The ECF coordinator will be Bennett Rosenberger.
Ben Cotroneo, then told everyone about Harvey Johnson’s wife Maggie. We were all very sad to hear that Maggie had passed away three weeks ago. It was great to see Harvey at today’s meeting. I made a motion to donate $200 to the fund of Harvey’s choice, in behalf of the Gulf Coast Division, in Maggie’s memory. It was seconded and approved. I will see that the check is sent to the Estero United Methodist Church as Harvey wished.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 P.M.
The next meeting will be March 17, 2004.
