In West Palm Beach

Minutes of the April 21, 2004 Meeting

The April meeting of the Gulf Coast Division was called to order by President, Bill Pancake. The meeting was held at the International Super Buffet in Port Charlotte. There were 26 members and guests present. After the pledge, all members and guests introduced themselves.
The minutes were approved as written.
The Treasurers report was approved as read.
We were fortunate enough to have a young lady attend our meeting today. Crystal Snyder, from Kirkwood Electric, was in attendance today.
We discussed guest speakers for our future meetings and upcoming events. May 5th through the 8th is the IAEI State meeting in West Palm Beach. June 26th is the date of the seminar hosted by the Gulf Coast division put on by Mark Ode.
Bill Pancake told us that he has the preprint of the 2005 NEC and he will bring it to our May meeting.
Pat Lewis brought up the subject of low voltage wiring being done by unlicensed contractors. He mentioned vacuum system wiring as an example. It has created some violations that bounced back on the electrical contractor. In some cases, Pat has had his electricians remove the vacuum system wiring to get rid of the violations. We all agreed that this is a problem that needs to be rectified. It was suggested that the electrical contractor notify the local building department and the general contractor when they know this is going on.
Pat also talked about extended service conductors to sub panels. It was agreed that SEU would not be allowed. An insulated neutral and a separate grounding conductor must be used along with the phase conductors.
Representatives from Fox-Rowden-McBrayer, Inc. put on a presentation regarding AFC cable systems and ACS/Uni-fab Products. Mr. David Chamberlain and Chris Robinson, put on a slide show that was very informative. We were shown samples of various AC cables and catalogues. The various uses of these cable were discussed. The advantages of this new cable were explained to us. Advantages included faster installation and a better grounding system. It is made in sizes up to 250 mcm. The plastic coated cable is listed for direct burial in concrete. David and Chris felt that this cable will replace a conduit system. They also gave a presentation on pre-fabricated branch circuit systems. This system could save a great deal of time and eliminate possible field errors. The entire presentation was excellent. A lively discussion regarding these products and their uses followed.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 P.M.
The next meeting will be May 19, 2004.
