I installed an optional stand-by generator at a residence and the inspector cancelled the inspection due to the lack of the sign (NEC Art. 702.8) I knew it was a matter of time before someone asked for this. My questions are; (1) it says to list the “type & location” of the unit. What exactly do they mean by type? What would you want for the location? Also it says that this sign must be posted at the service entrance, this would be the meter-can…right. Personally I would think at the panel. What do you guys say?

I brought this very question to my local fire marshal. I figured the fire rescue department would be one of the groups that would have an interest in what this sign should say and where it should be located.

While we don't dictate exactly what the sign must state, we suggest it follow this general guideline:

Heading (Caution, Warning, Danger, ect.)

Type (Standby Power Source, Generator, Photovoltaic System, ect.)

Location (SW Corner of Building, On Roof, Electrical Room #3, ect.)

EXAMPLE:

Caution
Automatic Back-up Generator
Located At SW Corner of Building

While 230.66 of the NEC indicates that individual meter socket enclosures are not to be considered service equipment, we have requested this sign be placed on both the meter socket enclosure and service equipment when not located adjacent to each other.
