Minutes of the May 21st, 2008 Meeting

The May meeting of the Gulf Coast Division was called to order by the President Jim Anderson at 12:30 PM. There were 24 members and guests present.
The Treasurer’s report was approved as read.
The minutes of the April meeting were approved as written.

Secretary Bryan Holland gave a report on the Annual Chapter Meeting held in Jacksonville. Bryan announced the names of the new BOD members, officers, and Honorary Members. The topic of in-house CEU courses was again brought to the floor and discussed. It was agreed to establish an in-house CEU program and start by presenting the Advanced Module Course at next month’s regular meeting. A discussion on the Peter Pluta Scholarship followed.

Jim Kenna notified the group that Alan Weiss of Sesco Lighting will be giving a presentation on energy conservation and lighting at next month’s regular meeting. Bennett Rosenberger notified the group on the status and upcoming events at the local ECF Chapter.

Under code discussion, Jonathan Peer inquired if AFCI breakers will potentially not operate properly when energized from a generator under a heavy load. George Blanton from Square D explained the operation of the devices and gave some tips to help avoid this issue. Kevin Malloy inquired on what jurisdictions are requiring low voltage permits, specifically in commercial buildings where rated walls are to be penetrated. A lengthy discussion on the topic followed. It was generally agreed that installations of Fire Alarm Systems and systems under the scope of Article 725 would need permits. All other installations are under the scope of the electrical contracting work within the building or structure.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 PM. The next meeting will be June 18th, 2008.
