Paraffin wax has been used in this area for some time as a potting compound for the fountain j box. Recently some have requested that there be no lead in the compound, my answer to that is that if the paraffin is good enough for canning, then its good enough for the j box if it provides the proper seal for the wiring within the j box. It is my personal feeling that the code does not require a listed potting compound for this purpose, only one that the AHJ approve. The use of the listed potting compounds that I am aware of cure rock hard and may make it difficult to repair wiring within the box, or add a fixture. Your comments would be appreciated.
