I am reviewing a 1300 foot television tower and inside the tower there is a two person elevator that goes up to 1200 feet. The designer wants to install his control wiring for the elevator in the same raceway that extends to the top of the tower for 120 volt recep., that may or may not be associated with the elevator, aircraft warning beacons, and 480volt circuits for possible deicing equipment.
First: does a tower elevator come under ART. 620, and next are the control circuits allowed in the same raceway as the other conductors, not associated with the elevator. The elevator company says that they do this all the time, all over the country, and they may, but I am not sure that the code allows this type of installation.

The scope of 620.1 covers elevators... and does not restrict the location of the elevator so I would think that Article 620 would cover an elevator located on the tower mentioned. Section 620.25 covers other utilization equipment branch circuits so I do not think that circuits for de-icing, beacons, and such are allowed in raceways that contain circuits related to the elevator operation.

Wouldn't this apply?

90-2. Scope

(b) Not Covered. This Code does not cover the following.
1. Installations in ships, watercraft other than floating buildings, railway rolling stock, aircraft, or automotive vehicles other than mobile homes and recreational vehicles.
FPN: While the scope of this Code indicates that the Code does not cover installations in ships, portions of this Code are incorporated by reference into Title 46, Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 110-113.
2. Installations underground in mines and self-propelled mobile surface mining machinery and its attendant electrical trailing cable.
3. Installations of railways for generation, transformation, transmission, or distribution of power used exclusively for operation of rolling stock or """installations used exclusively for signaling and communications purposes.
4. Installations of communications equipment under the exclusive control of communications utilities located outdoors or in building spaces used exclusively for such installations.""""

Gentlemen, In MA, all elevator wiring is Inspected by the State, the only wiring the local Inspector has authority on is usually the pit light and outlet. This is usually the elevator company`s way out for poor workmanship.!!

Most jurisdictions in FL inspect tower wiring:

Assuming that you are still on the 1999 NEC, I believe that 620-36 would allow for this type of installation. I would first ask for a calculation based on 620-33 to make sure that they do not overfill the raceway. If that is too difficult or too much trouble for the engineer to provide - well - hey - then they should just install that second raceway after all!! laugh

Also see 620-11(c) and (d).
