I agree but I am telling you as a ex utility employee that connection ties are a big deal with the utility.
But in defense of the utility company I think they also are on the side of safety and want to ensure themselves that the alternate power source will drop off line, To protect the linemen.
A lot of people forget that the 7200/240 volt transformer at the home works both ways meaning that the power exports thru the windings of the transformer to the primary side.

For safety issues it is the same problem during a massive outage(hurricane) that they have the same problem with plugin generators by the homeowner.
