2008 eliminated "lighting and appliance" panelboard classification so the "2 disconnect" rule is gone with it. Does that mean you can install a 6 breaker sub panel in a detached building that complies with 225.33 (assuming the load side breaker in the main panel adequately protects the remote panel per 408.36)

If 6 breakers were all that could be installed in that panel then 225.33 would allow it.

Yes.

The size and spaces of the panelboard has nothing to do with using the 6 handle rule.

408.36 exception would not apply to your installation.

You still need to take into consideration the markings and label on the panelboard itself. Until the panelboard labels are updated to include the new allowances in the 2008 NEC, the old rules will still apply.

I agree with Bryan, I have asked several manufactures to provide me a listing for the new larger panels and none have been able to show a properly listed panel.

What a great question! I like this revision. Who doesn't remember the hazards associated with overloaded 'split-bus panels'?? Remember the ITE 'Bulldog' panelboards with 2 mains?? Detached bldgs. under 225.33 and 225.36 allows the 'six disc.' rule for S.U.S.E. pnlbds. and has allowed this for some time. OCP is permitted to be at the main building per 408.36 Exception No. 1. Please recall that these rules coincide with the original 'tap rules' back in 240.21...

Old school...S.U.S.E....Suitable for Use as Service Equipment...A requirement that was inadvertantly dropped from Article 230 back in maybe '87 and then revised back in...Any UL listed piece of equipment even Transfer Switches and Contol Cabinets that are used as service equipment must bear this term on their label. Excuse me...'listing agencies'. Even primary service switchgear.
