Florida Chapter
Gulf Coast Division
Regular Meeting: (September 16, 2009)
Bryan Holland, Secretary

The September meeting of the Gulf Coast Division was called to order by the President Bud Keefer. Secretary Bryan Holland gave an update on IAEI business and other industry topics. The minutes of the August Meeting were approved as written. Sitting in as Treasurer, Joe Schneeberger announced that all finances are in order.

Bryan gave an update on membership and reminded to attendees of the October 1st, 2009 effective date of the 2008 National Electrical Code. Following a brief discussion, committees gave their reports to the membership. Bill Pancake reminded us of the 2011 NEC Comment submittal deadline. Joe Schneeberger sent around a sample of a new bonding product meeting the requirements of Section 250.94 of the NEC. Greg Brown and Tommy Lasprogato updated the group on membership ideas and having a social event to increase membership. Tommy then informed the membership on the other Division practices when financially supporting officers attending state and Chapter functions. Wes Colley of the ECF announced they will be having a Seminar in October on code changes and informed the group that ECF and the Suncoast Division are partnering for the 2010 Chapter Meeting to be held in Tampa. Jim Kenna announced Jeff Small of GE will be presenting a 2 HR Selective Coordination Seminar at the October Meeting.

Under new business, Joe Schneeberger asked 2 questions regarding 2008 code changes. The first was a clarification of exactly what areas of a dwelling will require AFCI protection. The other was on how many receptacle outlets will be required on the back of a dwelling when it has an enclosed porch. Bryan Holland opened a discussion on when a permit is required before FPL or any other utility is to reenergize the service. It was agreed that any work requiring disconnect of the service requires a permit and inspection. Another discussion was opened on how to handle vague language in manufacturer’s specifications and instructions. It was generally agreed after a brief discussion that the strictest interpretation of the rules should be followed.

Following the business meeting, Alan Weiss of Sesco Lighting gave a presentation on “Light, Lamps, and Ballasts.” Alan handed out mini hard drives for all the attendees and provided 1 hr of CEU credit. Alan opened a question and answer session following his presentation.
Meeting was adjoined at 2:30 PM. Our next meeting will be October 21, 2009.

Respectfully Submitted,

Bryan Holland, Secretary
