For facilities that primarily offer oil and filter change and lubrication service, not major engine repair or fuel dispensing, and the pit is unclassified per section 514.3(b)(1) and NFPA 30 A table 8.3.1 (exhaust ventilation provided).

1. Is the main floor area a Class 1 Division 2 location for a level up to 18" above the floor? NEC 511.3(b)(1).
2. Or is the main floor area unclassified because of the mechanical ventilation provided in the pit per NEC 511.3(b)(3) Exc.2?

Is thier the use of electrical equipment in the maintainance of oil changing. The only thing I could think of would be the drop light they use. Reading further to 511 and then refering to Table 514.(3)B1, if I'm reading it right is a class 1 division 2 location

the answer is probably no as the Florida bldg code requires mechanical ventilation in commercial garages. In most cases this satisfies the ventillation requirements of the N.E.C. The pit is already ventillated so no classified location. Still have to meet the other requirements as this is still a comm. garage.
