I received the following question via emailand thought it would be good to post here. It appears to me that work beyond repair or replacement of the lighting assembly itself would be out of the scope of licensing, however I recall recently the board made a statment that SIGN contractors are permitted to perform concrete / foundation work for the purposes of supporting a sign.

WHAT SAY YOU?

Good afternoon Sir, I hope you can help me answer a question. My question is can a Lighting Maintenance Specialty Contractor replace the poles supporting a parking lot light fixture? Is that within the scope of licensure as defined by FAC 61G6-7? I look forward to your reply.

61G6-7.001 Specialty Electrical Contractors.

The following types of specialty electrical contractors may apply to be certified under the provisions of Part II, Chapter 489, F.S., and Chapter 61G6-5, F.A.C., above. In order to be admitted to a specialty contractor examination, the person must show 6 years of comprehensive training, technical education, or broad experience on the type of electrical or alarm system work for which certification is desired.

(1) Lighting Maintenance Specialty Electrical Contractor. The scope of certification of a lighting maintenance specialty contractor is limited to the installation, repair, alteration, or replacement of lighting fixtures in or on buildings, signs, billboards, roadways, streets, parking lots and other similar structures. However, the scope of the certification does not include the provision of, or work beyond, the last electrical supplying source, outlet, or disconnecting means.

Rather than guess he can just ask ECLB for the answer.

Who else would do it? Does an unlimited EC have more training on poles than a lighting contractor?

If there was a concern, it would be for engineering and I assume these poles are engineered for the required wind load. At that point it is just installing them according to the instructions.

I think it has to do more with who lobbied for the addendum.
Just like mechanical contractors can replace the electrical connection to the air handler and condenser unit.
I don't even want to go there.

At least the Unlimited EC was tested on pole bases and concrete.
I had 2 such questions on my 1999 EC test.
I agree with Nick just ask the ECLB.
