Very cool, but I'm doubtful about the concept. I guess they think that they will sell many of these...I would not even consider buying it right now. Here is what is stated on the manufacturer's website:

"This item is currently waiting on final safety approval." Manufacturer's website is below:

FASTMAC

HOW CAN THEY SELL IT WHEN IT IS WAITING ON "FINAL SAFETY APPROVAL?" I take that to mean that it is not listed. Engadget should include that as part of "THE BAD" that they have listed on their site, under the "Scorecard" section. Looks like Engadget is trying to start a buzz about this product (judging from some of the comments) and my opinion is that they may even have a monied interest. Again, how does one fail to point out that it IS NOT LISTED? These are just my humble thoughts and opinions, take them as such.

Nick,

According to this page it has undergone testing and is just waiting on the listing number. I can see using this at a desk or maybe at a nightstand, especially if you have 2 or 3 things that need to be charged via USB plus a lamp. Just not at $20 for the damn thing. Then again it's marketed to people who use Macs so it's priced just right.

What does that mean?

"Safety Agency Approval(s)- TUV Rheinland (testing completed 12-21-10, Listing Number Pending but expected in February)"

To me, it means it is still not a listed product. Or am I wrong? We need to get Dick Widera or Tarry Baker on this.

I see it as a dumb usb connection meaning there is not a data connection. Just a point to be able to say plug in a iphone to charge it.
So do you want to chance a 300-400 dollar phone? that the 110v ac voltage jumps on it? If so go for it.

There is a topic going on right now over at rec.home repair about how big this thing is. It won't fit in the typical device box the users are finding in their house.

I imagine the real problem is the market analysis came back that if they couldn't get this in under $5 a unit, nobody was going to buy it.
I am still not sure what it is good for. Most receptacles are not that conveniently placed to be plugging and unplugging things and isn't this, electrically, just another wall wart, that you can't unplug, using power 24/7?
