I'm not really looking for opinions on this subject as I think we will for the most part, all agree. I'm looking specifically for any publications (articles) on the subject. I seem to remember IAEI mag had a few over the past decade, but I can't seem to revive any.

I have heard that NJ had a limit. I'll check with my Father. Anyhow for me...today I did 25. I guess it depends on what type, and how far you have to drive.

I believe anything over 15 is too many. We let contractors know that they may not get their inspection on the day requested, especially electrical where the finals are time consuming. We do roughs, undergrounds and service inspections first and finals with any time left over.

The Insurance Services Office, Inc., (ISO) is an independent statistical, rating and advisory organization that serves the property/casualty insurance industries. Their evaluations grade building departments effectiveness as to building construction regulation. With an evaluation period every five years, a jurisdiction has the opportunity to continually improve its score. The score is based on a range from one to ten, with one being exemplary. The lower the rating range, the lower the insurance costs for residents and business owners with participating insurance companies.

A very small part of the rating is based on how many inspections an inspector "should" do on any given day. Do you, as a building department employee even know what your ISO rating is? Has the administration made the last report available to you? Inquiring minds want to know - see what is suggested in the last report (remember, it is 1 report every 5 years). If you find out any information, please post it here for everyone to see, along with the population for your particular jurisdiction!

It's not much, but it is something to consider.

The City of Marathon varies from 10K to 30K population by the season. We were evaluated by ISO on 2/26/2010. We retained our rating of 4 for both residential and commercial as our City Manager was notified by letter on April 4th, 2010.
The BCEGS benchmark for staffing levels is 10 inspections per day per full-time inspector; 1 commercial plan review per day for a full-time plans examiner; and 2 residential plan reviews per day for a full-time plans examiner...Good luck with that.
As we all know there are several variables in the real world. Driving time; office duties; multi-tasking (licenses), etc. not to mention the budget. I will say that it is a privilege to work in this career.

I was unaware of an ISO rating and have been searching for the information for Collier County to no avail at present and is an ongoing venture.
As far as how many inspections are to many in this regard, it has been determined that 25 is the standard limit for each inspector for Collier County. How this was determined is unknown at this time. At this time I would venture in guessing that the ISO rating may have had something to do with this.

The ISO rating also takes into account the qualifications of the staff - are the inspectors also certified plans examiners, CBO's, multi-trade certified. This carries across inspectors, plans examiners and the BO/deputy BO. Not sure how much weight they give to this but I understand the better the training/ certifications the better the rating...

DA - An easy way to get at the report would be to have someone make a public records request for it. I bet that they recommend no more than 10.

SO - I do not believe that ISO takes into consideration multi-licensing in the regard that you describe. What they take into consideration is the number of years of experience of the individuals. ISO is not a proponent of the multi-licensing circus that we now have here in Florida.
